Denver’s historic Lower Downtown (or LoDo) neighborhood offers a variety of lodging, dining, area attractions, and activities options that are easily researched and reserved online; making planning a breeze.

The history of LoDo is long and colorful. Settled in 1858 by General William Larimer – he built his small cabin in the area and named his settlement “Denver City.” Today this 23 square-block area is remembered as the original settlement. Denver was put on the map in the 1880s when the population grew to over 35,000. The citizens then had raised enough capital to bring the Transcontinental Railroad to town; building a spur from Denver to Cheyenne.

Today LoDo is a small but important portion of one of the top 10 cities in the U.S. Summer visitors to the area enjoy outdoor concerts and fairs almost every weekend. Productions at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts are for all ages. This summer two of the headline shows are “The Wiz” and “Bombay Dreams.” Six Flags Elitch Gardens is also offers families a full day of activities with amusement park rides and a water park. Tickets to see a Colorado Rockies baseball game can be purchased at the box office, and the stadium is a LoDo landmark.

This summer, the Pepsi Center is presenting a wide variety of concerts and events. Faith Hill and Tim McGraw are coming in July along with the traveling troupe of Cirque du Soleil. Denver’s City Lights pavilion offers more concerts in an outdoor covered venue.

Choose from several dining options in the area. Wynkoop Brewery is centrally located for an after dinner beer. The Capital Grille and Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse have locations right in the area. McCormicks Fish House and Bar is located adjacent to the Oxford Hotel. This downtown Denver hotel provides a central location for exploring all of LoDo.

A visit to the Denver area provides a wide variety of activities and amenities. Narrowing down your choices can be done prior to your visit, starting with lodging and activities. You can even make restaurant reservations online. Pre-planning can eliminate the “what’s next” portion of your family or romantic getaway.
