Consumer Value with BT Total Broadband's Home Support Service

BT have announced that they are now offering the home PC consumer a service whereby a BT engineer will come on-site to their house, install broadband on their home PC, check online security, whist configuring and securing the consumers wireless network.

(PRWEB) June 24, 2006 -- BT have announced that they are now offering the home PC consumer a service whereby a BT engineer will come on-site to their house, install broadband on their home PC, check online security, whist configuring and securing the consumers wireless network.

Chris Eagle at the broadband comparison site www.broadbandchoices.co.uk comments "With internet online fraud growing significantly and as more people sign up to broadband this is a welcome and significant move by BT to help the average home PC user. There is a cost of the service, but it is not expected to be high."

This is a significant move from BT as broadband has become much more of a commodity by the recent arrival of the notion of "free" broadband. BT has stuck to its valued added principals and differentiated itself by offering online fraud and virus protection as part of their broadband offer.

BroadbandChoices conducted an online consumer survey and found that found that over 73% of broadband users consider themselves vulnerable to online fraud. The survey was conducted via the BroadbandChoices online polling tool over a period of four months.

BroadbandChoices estimate that of the 100,000 wireless routers being purchased every month, over 70% are not secured. Many residential addresses can connect to their neighbour's wireless networks, leaving a considerable number of home PCs open to an outside attack.

This has implications for the home users not just in terms of security, but it will also affect the consumer's broadband speed if homes are unwittingly sharing broadband connections.

BroadbandChoices welcome the move by BT to help the home PC and broadband consumer by offering a 24/7 service which they believe will help combat online fraud and secure home wireless networks.

BT is calling the new offering "BT Total Broadband," which consists of a standard 8MBps broadband connection, along with free internet voice calls, free video calls, and a suite of security software, all connected via BT's new router known as the "BT Home Hub."

BroadbandChoices Eagle comments "The interesting part of the new BT package is if the consumer takes BT Fusion -- a mobile phone that automatically routes calls via your BT broadband line. This is the start of mass consumer mobile VOIP calls and it has massive long term implications for the mobile operators." BT fusion offers the consumer free calls when in their "home zone," and then uses the mobile network of Vodafone Group Plc when outside this area.

BroadbandChoices compares broadband packages and is the UK's leading focused consumer broadband site allowing consumers to sign up online, whilst offering helpful advice and free broadband speed test (www.broadbandchoices.co.uk/speed-test.asp) to the home broadband consumer.
