Concomitant With Grant of SNAP-tagTM Key Patent, Covalys Further Expands Its Product Range

Witterswil, Switzerland (PRWEB) June 22, 2006 -- Covalys Biosciences AG today disclosed that a key patent on its SNAP-tag technology was granted in Europe. The claims in the patent cover the use of SNAP-tag’s self-labeling mechanism to label fusion proteins in lysates or in live cells at a precise time with fluorophores. This may be used for fluorescence imaging (alternative to GFP without the need for commercial license), or for advanced experimental designs such as “pulse-chase imaging”.

Concomitantly, the company announced the release of new products for both cellular and in-vitro use. These allow the use of DAPI filter sets for cellular imaging in the blue end of the spectrum and extend the range of fluorophores for in-vitro labeling from the ultraviolet to the infra-red end of the spectrum. In addition two new kits were released which provide control plasmids expressing tagged proteins with defined localization, for evaluation of the technology with new cell types and instrumentation.

“The granting of this patent and the extension of our product range consolidates our position as the leading provider of self-labeling protein tag technology,” said Tom Gibbs, Head of Marketing at Covalys. He continued: “The widespread availability of control plasmids expressing localized tagged proteins will speed-up preliminary evaluation, especially for commercial customers prior to their adoption of SNAP-tag as a platform technology.”

About Covalys Biosciences AG: Covalys provides products that help researchers in academic institutions and pharmaceutical and biotech companies to improve the efficiency of research into proteins and their function. Its SNAP-tag technology is the first commercially available protein tag which covalently links itself to any chemical probe provided as a substrate. Covalys’ technology is exclusively licensed from the Swiss federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (EPFL). Founded in June 2002, Covalys has headquarters in Witterswil, Switzerland.
