Move Over Zocor, Here Comes the Clones

Dallas, TX (PRWEB) June 25, 2006 -- Texas based drug wholesale company Siembien Pharmaceuticals announced today that they will make the new Zocor generic version available immediately and at true wholesale mail-order prices to the general public, at a cost as low as many pharmacies will be paying.
The Food and Drug Administration has approved the first generic version of Zocor® (active ingredient is simvastatin) this past Friday, an important step in the agency's effort to increase the availability of lower-cost generic medications.
Simvastatin is recommended for use along with a diet restricted in saturated fat and cholesterol to treat hypercholesterolemia (high cholesterol) and to reduce the amount of certain fatty substances in the blood such as triglycerides and other lipids. According to the research firm, IMS Health, statins accounted for $16 billion in U.S. sales in 2005. Zocor® was the second most widely prescribed statin.
Insurance companies are hoping to convince physicians and their patients that the inexpensive copies of Zocor will make the full-priced Lipitor (Zocor’s rival and number one statin) and Zocor an unnecessary expense.
Three other drug companies will now be legally allowed to sell simvastatin, the active ingredient in Zocor. As of this December, any company will be allowed to manufacture simvastatin, as long as it can prove that its version is chemically equivalent to Zocor.
