The Holiday Inn South Beach Resort, Miami Beach's first branded hotel, closes permanently after 40 years of operations.

Yesterday saw the end of an era when the Holiday Inn South Beach Resort closed its doors permanently after operating for 40 years as Miami Beach’s first branded hotel.

“In 1966, Kemmons Wilson, the visionary who founded Holiday Inns, Inc., built the Holiday Inn Convention Center (the name was later changed to Holiday Inn South Beach Resort). He was the first to bring a national hotel chain to Miami Beach. My family purchased the hotel in 1986 and we’ve been operating it ever since, so the closing is very sad for me. There are a lot of memories here,” stated Claire Callen, president of Oceanside Resorts, Inc. (“Oceanside”) operator and former owner of the hotel. Oceanside sold the property in August 2004 to a group of New York developers who plan to demolish the hotel and build a W Hotel & Residences. Demolition is scheduled for later this year.

“The Holiday Inn South Beach Resort was hugely successful and a leader in the market place. We owe that success to the dedication and hard work of our employees – some of which have worked at the property for as long as we have owned it,” continued Callen. “Saying goodbye to my staff was the hardest part of the closing. I hope they all know how much I appreciated and valued them, not only as employees, but also as individuals. We really did operate as a family and I think that translated into a great experience for our guests,” stated Callen.

The 355-room Holiday Inn South Beach Resort was located directly along the Atlantic Ocean at 2201 Collins Avenue, Miami Beach, Florida. It employed approximately 100 people.

Oceanside is an entrepreneurial real estate company that owns and/or manages over one million square feet of signature commercial, hotel and retail properties located along the Southeastern Atlantic seaboard including Charleston, South Carolina’s preeminent Class A office building the Bank of America Place. In the Miami, Florida area, Oceanside owns and operates the 84-room Fairwind Hotel & Suites in South Beach and operates the 218-room Holiday Inn Miami International Airport Hotel in Miami Springs.
