We all know that people with eating disorders have a distorted body image, continuing to think of themselves as "fat" even when they are pencil thin. In the U.S. women feel encouraged, usually expected, to follow movie star images in how they look and dress. What about women in other parts of the world? Renee Lederman reports on body image formation she studied in Croatia, France and the U.S. when she appears on Full Power Living (Thursday, July 13, 2006 9 am PT), hosted by Ilene Dillon (World Talk Radio dot com).
Body Image impacts the emotions and several important areas of life, including suicide, eating disorders and drinking patterns. Lederman's hundreds of interviews with girls and young women from different cultures resulted in her book, "Celebrate Your Life: Voices from Women Around the World" (2007), which contains personal stories about issues women face today. Lederman discusses anger, anxiety, depression and self-hate as they are connected to body image, and what she has discovered about how body image and emotion influence behavior.
Full Power Living, originated and hosted by psychotherapist Ilene Dillon, M.S.W., is "awakening the world to the power and importance of human emotions." Guests are cutting-edge thinkers, theorists and doers from a variety of walks in life, whose work intersects with human emotion. Shows are archived indefinitely on World Talk Radio and can be downloaded as MP3s. Other shows that address body image and eating patterns include Laurel Mellin (The Pathway and The Three Day Solution Plan), Anita Johnston, Ph.D. (Eating in the Light of the Moon), and Drs. Richard and Karilee Shames (Feeling Fat, Fuzzy or Frazzled?)
Listeners are encouraged to call in (toll free) during the live broadcast with their own stories related to such issues as body image, food disorders, or success. 866-613-1612
