Better Sex from Plastic Surgery -- Perhaps, Other Factors Should Motivate Patients

While a new study suggests that plastic surgery improves many patients’ sex life, this is the wrong reason to have surgery, says Dallas plastic surgeon.

Dallas, TX (PRWEB) July 11, 2006 -- Does plastic surgery improve your sex life? Apparently so, according to a recent study that found breast augmentation and body procedures such as liposuction improved sexual satisfaction for a majority of patients.

But sexual satisfaction is a poor reason for choosing surgery, says Dallas plastic surgeon Dr. Fred Hackney (http://www.drhackney.net). “People should have surgery for other reasons,” says Dr. Hackney, “but you shouldn’t have it specifically to improve your sex life.”

The study, published in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal, surveyed 330 patients who had had major cosmetic surgery procedures. Eighty percent of patients having a breast augmentation and 50% of the patients having a body procedure reported improvements in their sexual satisfaction. Roughly 70% of the patients reported that their partner’s sex life had also improved.

“The key to this study is self-esteem,” says Dr. Hackney. “More than 95% of people participating in the study reported an improved body image. If a person feels better about your body, you can see how that could improve their sex life.”

However, this focus on sexual partners concerns some plastic surgeons. “As surgeons, we’re taught to ask patients about their motivation for surgery,” says Dr. Hackney, “The motivation has to be internal. If they’re doing it for someone else, that’s a bad reason.”

For example, Hackney says patients shouldn’t seek surgery to improve their marriage. “If they’re going through a divorce and they think plastic surgery is going to save their marriage, it’s not going to work,” he says.

Hackney says that raising self-esteem is a good reason for cosmetic surgery. “If an improved self-image leads to other, unexpected benefits, that’s good,” he says, “But these other benefits shouldn’t be the deciding factor.”
