While pixel ads were clever, they weren't practical for site owners who ultimately gained little benefit from owning pixels.
Spokane, WA (PRWEB) July 6, 2006
First there was the 60-second ad. Then the 30-second ad. Now - there's the 1-word ad.
The website selling this "word cloud" is http://www.500TopSites.com.
The site's creator, ad copywriter Ray Edwards, thinks this unique approach to selling 1-word "ads" might just create enough "buzz" to make the site more popular than Britney Spears or even the World Cup.
"I'm not saying it will happen for sure," Edwards says. "I'm just saying it could happen. And if it does, I won't complain."
Website owners know that to make it to the top of the search engine rankings, a site needs "keyword links" from other sites.
The site allows other website owners to buy "virtual real estate", staking a claim on the keywords most relevant to their own site.
According to Edwards, "We're just selling 500 words to sponsors. One word at a time."
http://www.500TopSites.com consists of nothing but 500 words. Each word is available to be claimed by a sponsor, and that sponsor will own the word for as long as the site is online (a minimum of 2 years).
For example, if the word "car" was purchased by a company called Bob's Big Car Dealership. Each time a visitor clicks the word "car" they would be taken directly to the sponsor's website.
Edwards says his idea is backed up by SEO experts.
"Remember the pixel ad craze from 2005?" asks Joel Comm, President of InfoMedia, Inc. "While pixel ads were clever, they weren't practical for site owners who ultimately gained little benefit from owning pixels."
With a site like 500TopSites, Comm says, "...site owners can customize their word link and receive search engine keyword linking benefit from the hyperlink."
Those who claim one of the words on the site can customize their word in a variety of sizes, colors, highlights, and mouseover text. Every time a new visitor comes to the site, the words on the page are displayed in a random order.
"I teach my clients that they need to 'own' the word associated to their business in the mind of their potential customers," Edwards says. "Now I'm giving them the chance to literally do just that."
At the time of this writing, some words were still available to be claimed.
