Berkeley Process Control, Inc. announced today that it has introduced an advanced motion-and-machine controller delivering unique, productivity enhancing capabilities to semiconductor fab equipment.

The new BX-300 is the latest evolutionary enhancement of a series of space saving, highly integrated motion-and-machine controllers already employed in a variety of semiconductor fab tools. Like its predecessor, the BX-300 enables Autocalibration technology--an innovation that reduces costly robot teaching and fab tool downtime. The BX-300 provides eight axes of motion control, and six internal drives--providing substantial volume reduction compared to other control systems. An enhanced design enables BX-300 to directly drive a broad spectrum of off-the-shelf, atmospheric and vacuum wafer-handling robots. And, with more than four times the compute power of its predecessor, the BX-300 ensures fab tool throughput will not be captive to motion controller capability.

For semiconductor tools application, the BX-300 is bundled with Berkeley’s Semiconductor Toolkit--a uniquely powerful application configuration and maintenance utility that substantially simplifies those tasks. Host protocol command interpretation and emulation capabilities simplify BX-300 integration into previously closed system architectures.

Autocalibration technology improves semiconductor fab equipment productivity by automating critical robot calibration processes that are conventionally performed by technicians using time-consuming and subjective manual methods. Calibration that previously required hours is decreased to minutes--reducing costly production downtime. Subjectivity is eliminated, resulting in highly repeatable calibration and improved tool reliability. Autocalibration technology is in use in demanding tool applications in some of today’s most advanced semiconductor fabs.
