The dream began in Canton, OH and now Eddie Levert, Walter Williams, Sr., and Eric Nolan Grant, known collectively as The O’Jays, return to their hometown of Canton, OH to host the Second Annual O’Jays Celebration Weekend, July 14-16, 2006. The community-oriented celebration weekend will collaborate with Canton’s Zing in the City, presented by the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce. All festivities will be star-studded and bring a festive presence to the city of Canton. Proceeds from the weekend will benefit The O'Jays Scholarship Fund, to provide scholarships for young disadvantaged students. The scholarship funds will be administered by the Stark Community Foundation.
The 3-day celebration will feature a Scholarship Banquet; Celebrity Golf Tournament at the Glenmoor Country Club; a free O’JAYS Concert hosted by the Canton Chamber of Commerce; a Family Reunion-style gathering and rededication of the O’Jays Parkway in Northeast Canton; Talent Showcases: events for the children including, games, rides, petting zoo, pony rides and free hot dogs, popcorn and cotton candy. The weekend celebration is to pay a special tribute to The O’Jays who have paved the way for many artists in the music industry.
The O’Jays Celebrity Weekend event will attract local and national media, celebrities, VIPs and the Canton community. Confirmed guests include; The O’Jays, Gerald Levert, Sean Levert, Congressman Ralph Regula, Steve Harvey (Comedian), Charles Oakley (NBA player), Sam Jones (NBA legend), Evander Holyfield (former heavyweight champion), Johnnie Gill (New Edition), Clifton Davis (actor), Chuck Barksdale (The Dells), Vern Allison (The Dells), Omarosa (The Apprentice), Harry Boomer (Cleveland TV Personality), Joe Torry (comedian), DJ Biz Markie, Willie E. Gary (Renowned Attorney) and partner Lorenzo Williams, Esq., Sally and Chad Coleman (HBO’s The Wire), Phil Chenier (Sports commentator and former NBA player), Former Washington Redskins; Brigg Owens, Mark Mosely, Mike Bragg, Larry Brown, Roy Jefferson, and many more to be announced. Steve Perry, Executive Director of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, is chairperson of the Canton O’Jays' Steering Committee.
The O’Jay’s successful career spans over 40 years with 10 gold, nine platinum albums and a Rock and Roll and Grammy Hall of Fame induction to their credit. They are one of the most vital and beloved R&B vocal groups of all time. Now in their 43rd year making music, the groups’ recent album, “Imagination” (Music World Entertainment) is still blowing up the airways. The O’Jays have released over 25 albums. Their previous album, For The Love Of, was certified gold and received a Grammy nomination. The hit song, "For the Love of Money" is the theme song for the popular Apprentice Show with Donald Trump. The group was also featured in the acclaimed movie The Fighting Temptations and continues to tour and perform before sold out audiences around the world.
