Big Nerd Ranch, Inc., one of the foremost providers of intensive training classes in programming and system administration, today announced the dates for the October PostgreSQL Bootcamp. The class, scheduled for October 23-27, is five days of intensive instruction on PostgreSQL 8.1 as a database solution for professional applications. Instructor Chris Campbell guides students through the ins and outs of PostgreSQL wherein, by the end of the week, attendees will emerge with advanced skills in PostgreSQL administration. The syllabus covers the full range of PostgreSQL capabilities and is launched with an overview of building and installing a PostgreSQL server. Once that skill is mastered, the course leaps forward through a range of advanced features, including, but not limited to:

  • pgAdmin and phpPgAdmin
  • creating databases and schemas
  • security and OpenSSL
  • data replication using Slony-I
  • stored procedures
  • PL/pgSQL and C functions
  • tuning for optimum performance
  • online backups

No previous experience in PosgreSQL is required, but given the intricate nature of the topic, students attending the class should have some background with the UNIX command line and administration, simple SQL statements, and basic programming concepts. The class structure is fluid and is designed to be practical for the students attending. Therefore, the class outline can be adjusted to accommodate the needs and real-world challenges facing participants.

"In this industry, there are certain buzzwords one hears over and over again and PostgreSQL has become one of them," commented Big Nerd Ranch founder, Aaron Hillegass. "One of the most pressing concerns for organizations, regardless of size, is finding a database system that has the requisite flexibility and robustness to accommodate an organization's data storage and retrieval needs. PostgreSQL answers that demand with an elegant solution that rivals, if not exceeds, its commercial competitors. Chris Campbell has been proselytizing the wonders of PostgreSQL as an instructor for over three years and is unmatched for providing keen, insightful and highly adaptive instruction to database administrators."

Chris Campbell came to the Big Nerd Ranch in 2002 after studying computer science at Georgia Tech and working at Cisco Systems as a programmer and system administrator supporting the 12000-series GSR routers. In addition, he worked for an Atlanta-area IT consulting firm honing his skills solving cross-platform and networking challenges. Since assuming his role as PostgreSQL Bootcamp instructor, Chris has developed and fine-tuned the curriculum and instructional materials into one of the flagship courses in the Big Nerd Ranch schedule of classes.
