The FreeBSD Foundation announced the availability of certified Java Runtime Environment (JRE) and Java Development Kit (JDK) binaries for the FreeBSD 5.5 and 6.1 operating systems. Built on the latest J2SE 5.0 Update 7 release from Sun Microsystems, this new distribution delivers on The FreeBSD Foundation's promise to make FreeBSD a robust platform for the development and deployment of Java applications.

BOULDER, CO (PRWEB) July 11, 2006 -- Today, the FreeBSD Foundation announced the availability of certified Java Runtime Environment (JRE) and Java Development Kit (JDK) binaries for the FreeBSD 5.5 and 6.1 operating systems. Built on the latest J2SE 5.0 Update 7 release from Sun Microsystems, this new distribution delivers on the FreeBSD Foundation's promise to make FreeBSD a robust platform for the development and deployment of Java applications.

New to this release is support for the AMD64 architecture. "64-bit systems are fast becoming the norm in server deployments. Supporting the AMD64 platform was a natural next step in our move to make FreeBSD a fully capable Java platform," said Deb Goodkin, Director of Operations for the FreeBSD Foundation.

Just three months after the last release, this release also enhances existing support for the i386 architecture. "Through timely releases, we are showing our commitment to bring the latest Java technology to the FreeBSD community. Whether as an end-user or an OEM, you can now depend on a steady stream of certified Java releases," said Justin Gibbs, secretary/treasurer of the FreeBSD Foundation.

Noting the collaborative effort behind Java support in FreeBSD was Robert Watson, president of the FreeBSD Foundation, "These releases would not be possible without the efforts of the volunteers developing Java for FreeBSD, Sun Microsystems, and our donors. Few realize the time, passion, and expense required to make Java a reality for FreeBSD. Thanks for your support!"
