Brunswick Plantation Reaches Half-Way Point in Major Golf Course Renovation

Brunswick Plantation & Golf Resort, one of “America’s Best Master Planned Golf Communities” according to Where To Retire magazine, has reached the half-way point in the renovation of its three 9-hole golf courses, The Magnolia, The Azalea and The Dogwood. The courses are receiving new putting surfaces and several new tee boxes that stretch the length of each course. They are on schedule to reopen August 1, 2006.

Calabash, NC (PRWEB) July 12, 2006 -- Brunswick Plantation & Golf Resort, one of “America’s Best Master Planned Golf Communities” according to Where To Retire magazine, has reached the half-way point in the renovation of its three 9-hole golf courses, The Magnolia, The Azalea and The Dogwood. The courses are receiving new putting surfaces and several new tee boxes that stretch the length of each course. They are on schedule to reopen August 1, 2006.

“There’s a lot of excitement about the changes at our three nines,” said Shawn Hicken, head golf professional at Brunswick Plantation. “It’s clear that the courses will emerge as much more interesting and challenging. Our lodging facilities have remained open during these renovations and we’ve put golfers on nearby courses. But they are keeping a watch on work underway and we’ve received a lot of requests for tee times after we reopen.”

In addition to the course changes, the renovations at the three nines involve landscaping, new garden areas and flowerbeds.

“Our intent is to enhance the golfers’ overall experience at Brunswick Plantation,” said Heather Watkins, superintendent of golf course landscaping at Brunswick Plantation. “We’ve added more landscaping and flowers to make the overall course complex more visually appealing and memorable. We are distinguishing our courses by the dramatic beauty of our landscape. In the future, golfers who tee it up at Brunswick Plantation will remember not only the challenge and fun of our courses, but the exceptional environment we have created.”

All 27 greens and the practice green at Brunswick Plantation are being replaced with Champion Bermuda grass. The natural contours of the putting surfaces will be preserved and the new grass will enable the greenskeeper to maintain very consistent, smooth and fast greens.

“In recent years, numerous golf courses have been making the switch from bent grass to the new Champion ultra dwarf Bermuda grass,” said Rob Voughn, golf course superintendent for Brunswick Plantation. ”This grass is a great performer and even the PGA TOUR likes it. They switched their greens at the TPC at Southwind from bent to Champion in 2005 for the FED EX St. Jude PGA Tournament in Memphis, Tennessee. So we’re very confident that the golfers who come to Brunswick Plantation will be very impressed.”

In addition to changes to the greens, lengthening the course and enhancing the landscape, Brunswick Plantation’s management is sprucing up the course by repaving the cart paths, strategically planting trees around the course to define hazards and fairways, reshaping grass bunkers, and removing some sand bunkers.

“Brunswick Plantation’s courses are going to the next level with this renovation,” said Bill Bernier, resort director for Brunswick Plantation and Golf Resort. “The physical changes in the courses certainly signal the upscaling of our resort, and we’re also switching from 8 to 10 minute intervals between tee times. We’re aiming to deliver a country club experience that will bring golfers back again and again.”
