Ascender Corporation, a leading provider of advanced font products, today announced that it is releasing a Unicode-compliant font solution to meet the Unicode 5.0 specification. The “Ascender Uni” fonts are sans serif designs available in both proportional & fixed widths.

The Unicode Standard is a character coding system designed to support the worldwide interchange, processing, and display of the written texts of the diverse languages used throughout the world. The Unicode 5.0 specification is the latest specification released by the Unicode Consortium and provides standardized character positions for over 1,369 additional glyphs and 99,022 glyphs in all.

The Ascender program provides developers who want to distribute a commercial quality Unicode-compliant font that provides extensive language support the ability to do so economically. Ascender also provides font licenses to companies or institutions that would like to use a large Unicode-compliant font internally within their organization. Ascender offers flexible implementations including a single “big font” or a series of language modules for specific geographic regions. In addition, Ascender also provides a variety of licensing options and supports a variety of font formats including bitmap, TrueType® and OpenType®.

Ascender’s program provides customers with an initial font or set of fonts that meets the Unicode 2.1 standard. Ascender will then provide scheduled updates to font(s), with each update providing the additional characters necessary to meet the next Unicode specification. Ascender’s program also provides localized support for Korean, Japanese, Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese versions.

“The Ascender Unicode 5.0 program enables companies to deliver products with the broadest language coverage in world, said Steve Kuhlman, Vice President of Ascender Corporation. “The Ascender Unicode 5.0 program is unique because it provides extensive language coverage in an initial deliverable along with the benefit of providing regular updates to keep the font current with the Unicode specifications, all with flexible licensing options.

The team at Ascender has extensive experience developing many Unicode-compliant fonts. They were instrumental in developing the most popular Unicode-compliant font, Arial® Unicode MS, for Microsoft and have provided Unicode-compliant fonts to many other top companies.
