Washington, D.C. 2003 -President George Bush mandated “No Child Left Behind; “legislation as an attempt to Federalize a solution to the disparity in the academic achievement of low and high SES students in America’s public schools. Wanda Ashford Ruff Longshore, has developed theories which logically explain, the disparity in the educational achievement of these students; particularly, African American and White students. This author defines the correlates of academic achievement; including socio-economic status of families, teacher expectancies, test bias, and curriculum development from historical and contemporary perspectives,
In her newest book, No Children Left Behind, Longshore takes issue with assertions made in the Declaration of Independence, that all men are created equally ; proving the opposite to be true; that no men, women or children are created equally. According to this author, the public school curriculum is not only based upon this pseudo-reality, but has failed historically to take into account the individual learning styles of all the students; accounting for the disparity between the academic achievement of African American and white students.
About the Author:
Longshore received a bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences and a Master’s Degree in Counseling from San Diego State University. As a doctoral student in the area of Educational Psychology at UCLA, she conducted research in the areas of The Effects of Socio-Economic Status upon Academic Achievement of African American and Hispanic Students. No Children Left Behind is her third book.
