Denver, CO (PRWEB) July 26, 2006
Mike Gerding, veteran international equity fund portfolio manager, announced today the launch of his firm, Rio Asset Management, LLC, which will focus on international small-cap investing. The company will specialize in investing in the world’s leading small, yet rapidly growing, public companies for pensions, endowments, foundations and other investment companies.
With more than 20 years experience managing international portfolios, Gerding has been responsible for successfully starting and running the foreign investment departments of Founders Asset Management, Denver Investment Advisors and, most recently, Wasatch Advisors. Russ Kinnel, Morningstar's director of fund research, once wrote on CNBC.com, “Manager Mike Gerding has significant and heartening experience as a foreign smaller-cap-growth manager ...” Gerding will once again be applying his proven expertise to an asset class that continues to garner greater attention and allocation.
“There are only a limited number of proven—and accessible—asset managers in the foreign small/mid-growth category,” said Gerding. “We believe this asset class continues to be one of the least exploited by investors, and it provides the potential for long term growth and the addition of alpha for our clients’ portfolios.”
Consistent with Gerding’s hallmark investment style, Rio Asset Management will identify rapidly growing international small-cap companies through intensive, bottom-up research. The firm will focus on choosing companies with superior management, sustainable competitive advantage, rational valuations relative to country/industry, and market capitalization of less than $5 billion.
Prior to creating Rio Asset Management, LLC, Gerding was the lead international portfolio manager at Wasatch Advisors where he launched the Wasatch International Growth Fund in June 2002, which was chosen as one of Barron’s top 100 funds in 2005. He was also responsible for managing separate international small-cap accounts for several institutional clients. The products were closed to new investors due to capacity constraints in the fall of 2005.
Before his time at Wasatch, Gerding worked at Denver Investment Advisors (DIA) serving as vice president and portfolio manager of the Westcore International Frontier and International Select Funds. Morningstar ranked Gerding’s Westcore International Frontier Fund as the “Rookie of the Year” in 2000.
Prior to DIA, Gerding was senior vice president at Founders Asset Management and a portfolio manager of the Founders Worldwide Growth, International Equity and Passport Funds. During his tenure at Founders, he was chosen as one of the world’s top 100 money managers by Barron’s in 1997 and, under his watch, the Worldwide Growth Fund was voted the best Global Equity Fund by Worth Magazine in 1995. He was a portfolio manager with NCNB Texas before joining Founders. Gerding earned a master's of Business Administration and a bachelor's of Business Administration in Finance from Texas Christian University. Outside of work Gerding volunteers with several youth-oriented causes and is an avid fly fisherman.
