When Lis Baccigaluppi and Mary Delamater, owners of the new LezCruise website and travel agency, booked their first cruise in March of 2005, they were torn between an all-lesbian charter and a regular cruise. They ultimately chose a regular cruise for its lower cost, but they wished it would have been possible to know beforehand if any other lesbians were sailing. To address this need, they recently launched http://www.lezcruise.com, an interactive, community-driven travel site.
“The other passengers were very nice, but it was clear that many of them had never really been around gay people and didn’t quite know how to talk to us,” Lis Baccigaluppi recounts. “After we got back, we realized how nice it would have been if we’d known even one other lesbian couple on board.”
“We’d speculate a little about other passengers,” added Mary Delamater. “But you can’t really go up to someone and say ‘Excuse me, are you gay?’ It would have been nice to know before hand.”
The new website has two main features to try to help lesbians find each other before sailing. The first feature is a listing of cruises on which lesbians are either booked or interested in booking. Thus, a lesbian woman interested in sailing to Alaska, for instance, can check the website for Alaska sailings which other lesbian women are booked on or simply interested in. The second feature is discussion boards specific to each posted sailing, so that women can choose to get acquainted before the cruise. There are also general discussion boards.
“It is our hope that any lesbian who is currently booked on a cruise, whether that booking is through us or any other agency, will go to our site and post their cruise," said Lis Baccigaluppi. "Even if they don't choose to be any more active than that, just posting the cruise will greatly increase their chances of not being the only lesbian on the ship."
