Nelson & Nelson Antiques Acquires “Scent-sational” Treasures Rare Silver Overlay Perfume Bottles, Decanters Now Available

Nelson & Nelson Antiques announces the acquisition of a large collection of rare silver overlay perfume bottles, decanters and porcelain items, all beautifully accented with silver overlay decoration.

New York, NY (PRWEB) July 28, 2006 -- Nelson & Nelson Antiques announces the acquisition of a large collection of rare silver overlay perfume bottles, decanters and porcelain items, all beautifully accented with silver overlay decoration.

In Europe, silver and crystal were usually combined by topping cut glass items with silver stoppers, but Yankee ingenuity took a distinctly different approach and devised a new technique where the silver was chemically applied directly onto the glass in a variety of patterns. These were then decorated, often with exquisite detailing, into beautiful works of art. This uniquely American design style, named silver overlay, is now highly sought after by not only collectors, but all lovers of beautiful objects.

From approximately 1880 until the early 1920s, no upper middle class household in America would have been without items decorated with silver overlay. At the height of its popularity the technique was used to decorate vases, decanters, trivets and porcelain, all of which are now highly collectable. It is, however, the perfume and cologne bottles which remain the most prized among collectors, especially the rare colored glass items which remain both practical and beautiful and make wonderful gifts for any occasion.

Nelson & Nelson’s recent acquisition of a substantial collection of these “scent-sational” treasures includes items in a wide variety of shapes, sizes and colors, including the most desirable and rarer red and green colors. The collection also includes a large and comprehensive selection of Lenox porcelain items in a myriad of shapes and sizes.
