In Europe, silver and crystal were usually combined by topping cut glass items with silver stoppers, but Yankee ingenuity took a distinctly different approach and devised a new technique where the silver was chemically applied directly onto the glass in a variety of patterns. This uniquely American design style, named silver overlay, is now highly sought after by not only collectors, but all lovers of beautiful objects.
From approximately 1880 until the early 1920s, no upper middle class household in America would have been without items decorated with silver overlay.
