Academy of Art University graduate Gye Won Gho, a.k.a. Kaywon Ko, has won the prestigious 2006 SIGGRAPH International Student Interactive Media Competition.

Gye Won Gho, who earned an MFA in New Media, graduated from the Academy of Art University in the fall of 2005. Garman Yip, also an Academy of Art alum who now works at TBWA/Chiat/Day as an Interactive Art Director, earned the award last year, and fellow Academy graduate Jin Young Kim took home the award in 2004.

Considering the number of incredibly talented entrants and the prestige of the SIGGRAPH award, the Academy of Art is gratified by the accomplishments of its students. “We are so proud that our students have been acknowledged for achieving a high level of excellence three years in a row!” exclaimed Lourdes Livingston, Academy of Art Graduate Director of Computer Arts New Media.

Gho’s winning entry, Living In Color, focuses on the psychology, symbolism and association of color. While many take the colorful world around them for granted, the thrust of Living In Color is to expose the active viewer to the intricacies and history of color theory.

Gye Won explains, “Anyone living in our modern society who has a computer can become a user for this website. The site relieves stress and weariness that result from looking into mere white color in the computer screen too much or receiving heavy exposure to artificial colors, which is a common occurrence these days. The seven prime colors that govern this website is important for people to understand and experience so that they can get closer to the natural world. Moreover, these colors can also be utilized as methods for meditative treatment and fun. Both education, and exploration of color can be accomplished in a creative process through this website.”

Living in Color can be experienced at http://www.livingincolor.net.

Living In Color will be highlighted at the SIGGRAPH International Conference in Boston at the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center, July 30 through August 3, 2006.
