Vienna, VA (PRWEB) August 7, 2006
The Brian Bedell 2-Young Foundation announced today that it is holding the 11th Annual Northern Virginia Wiffle® Ball World Series on Saturday, August 19th at Waters Field in Vienna, Va. Proceeds from the event will benefit The Brian Bedell 2-Young Foundation supporting brain cancer research.
Gates will open to the public at 9 a.m. Fifty-six teams will compete in an all-day tournament beginning at 10 a.m., with playoffs starting at 4 p.m. and finals at 7 p.m. Congressman Tom Davis (R-VA) and Delegate Steve Shannon (D-Fairfax) will go head-to-head in a Home Run Derby during the opening ceremonies. Admission is $5; kids seven and under are free.
New to this year’s event is a special tournament for kids 12 years old and under. The informal tournament will start at 1 p.m. Teams can register the day of the event by noon. The first 16 teams to register can participate.
In addition to the wiffle® ball tournament, there will be fun-filled events for the whole family. There will be a raffle and a silent auction where spectators can bid on items such as tickets to the Washington Redskins and the Washington Nationals. There will also be plenty of activities for kids including moon bounces, carnival games, face painting and clowns, and a special performance by children’s entertainer Mr. Knick Knack.
The Town of Vienna has proclaimed August 19th Brian Bedell Brain Tumor Awareness Day. "Vienna is proud to host such a worthy event as the Northern Virginia Wiffle® Ball World Series to benefit The Brian Bedell 2-Young Foundation. We believe this is a start of a great tradition that the Vienna community will embrace for many years to come,” said Vienna Mayor Jane Seeman.
“This year’s event is going to be bigger than ever,” said Mike Ryan, commissioner of the Northern Virginia Wiffle® Ball World Series. “The Town of Vienna has opened its heart to Brian and we are thrilled to be able to hold this event in Brian’s home town. Not only will we raise money to fight brain cancer, but also we will have a fun-filled day full of love and support for Brian and those afflicted with brain cancer.”
A native of Vienna, Brian was diagnosed with a grade IV glioblastoma brain tumor on Sept. 8, 2003. Despite extensive treatment at The Brain Tumor Center at Duke including four craniotomies, radiation, and participation in experimental trials, Brian lost his battle and passed away on May 23, 2005.
Brain cancer research is under funded and the cure rate is significantly lower than that of many other types of cancer. Brian, his wife Amy and his sister Kristin established The Brian Bedell 2-Young Foundation in 2004 to help change this. The mission of the foundation is to help find a cure for brain cancer. The Brian Bedell 2-Young Foundation is a positive force for other patients dealing with a brain tumor diagnosis and strives to help other patients and their families deal with this formidable opponent.
