Philadelphia's South Street Announces 'The Hippest Street In Town' Holds a Place of Honor for the Embattled 'Rocky' Statue

As the placement of Sylvester Stallone's "Rocky" statue at Philadelphia Art Museum raises the ire of the Art Commission, South Street offers "Rocky Statue" a permanent place of honor.

Philadelphia, PA (PRWEB) August 5, 2006 -- While the Art Commission shuns the half-ton bronze "Rocky" statue as inappropriate to be exhibited anywhere near the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the folks down on the "hippest street in town" think it would be a pretty cool addition to the area's already legendary funky vernacular.

According to South Street Headhouse District Executive Director, David Hammond, "we would be happy to help get the Art Commission off the hook on this hot potato issue."

In a letter sent to the Art Commission today, Hammond states, "As South Street is the official start of Rocky’s home turf of South Philly, we are the appropriate location. It is also appropriate that the South Street District is made up of many individuals who have put their lifestyles and livelihoods on the line, just as Rocky did. The statue belongs on South Street!"

And Hammond and the SSHHD community leaders already have a spot picked out for Rocky! The island at the intersection of South and S. 2nd Streets would be an ideal place for the statue. The Ducks, the Trolley, the Big Bus and numerous horse drawn carriages all pass this intersection throughout the day.

"Tourists would know where to find the statue and could make their way back to South Street upon the completion of their tour and get their picture taken with Rocky," says Hammond. "Why force the issue and put the statue where it’s not wanted? Bring Rocky to South Street where his guts, work ethic and determination are admired and appreciated."
