Grief over the loss of a beloved friend or family member is intense and potentially devastating, yet the power of the human spirit can lift us to new heights if we confront the negatives and embrace what is positive.
Cheron Mayhall blends memoir with fantasy, in her new book “The Bridge Is Love” (ISBN 1412063280). Through her own personal recovery process after the death of her son, Mayhall reclaimed her spirit and now offers hope and encouragement for facing the challenges that confront us all. She leads readers to ultimately be bold rather than timid, shunning the victim mentality common with the grief process. Through her story, we tap into the God-given spirit of power and love, and in so doing, honor the memory of the one who has died.
Mayhall’s second son, Scotty, was killed in a highway accident at age 4 in 1977. In “The Bridge Is Love,” Scotty tells the tale with pure innocence, characteristic of a young child, but reflecting wisdom and understanding gained viewing the human condition through the passage of time from his heavenly vantage point. He shares his memories and observations of earthly events, at the same time recounting his experiences as a newcomer in a Heaven where love and happiness abound. His new family and neighborhood includes his long-deceased great-grandmother, his beloved Uncle, a new best friend, and other significant mentors.
The Mayhall family was overwhelmed with loneliness and sorrow upon the loss of Scotty. Nevertheless, they felt compelled to confront the situation actively, seeking a return to equilibrium in their lives and the life of their surviving son, age 6. “The Bridge Is Love’s” unique perspective emphasizes the poignancy of the human condition. It offers universal messages of humor, faith and love for everyone confronting life’s greatest challenges, hoping to reclaim joy in their lives. Not merely a story about loss, but a significant declaration towards the beauty of life that will strike chords in us all as we navigate through the transient nature of the human experience.
Mayhall lives in Port Townsend, WA. She received her Ph.D. in Counseling and Adult Education at Oregon State University. Her significant contributions to the field include international Peace Corps work, founder and President of Salem, OR chapter of The Compassionate Friends supporting bereaved parents and families, founder and Executive Director of the Oregon COPE Project, which supports families raising children with disabilities, and three years as President of the American Society for Deaf Children. “The Bridge Is Love” (ISBN 1412063280) can be purchased at online bookstores.
