4th Annual Parry Sound Tugfest August 25-26th 2006

(PRWEB) August 14, 2006 -- Working and pleasure tugs from around the Great lakes will be steaming to the Parry Sound Harbour next week for the 4th annual Georgian Bay Parry Sound Tugfest. Come and give the hard-working, underappreciated tugboat the kudos it deserves.

Hosted by the Parry Sound Area Chamber of Commerce and in support of the West Parry Sound Health Centre Foundation, the event includes a festival of lights parade, tugboat viewing, tugboat races, boat tours, and more.

Organizers are expecting participants from Parry Sound, the Penetang/Midland area, Sault St Marie, Port Dover and possibly some entries from the United States. "Last year we had a dozen tugs participating in the race and this year we will have over 20." said Capt Bob an organizer for the event and long time tug enthusiast.

The tugboats at this years' event range from 15 to 50 feet in length and include fish tugs, tow boats, and converted to pleasure historic work boats. At Tugfest 2006 you'll have a chance to talk to each of the tug captains about the history of these impressive great lake vessels.

"This is an excellent chance for the younger generation to learn a little about an important part of our past. Tugboats played a significant role in shaping Canada and some even participated in the second world war." adds Capt Bob who also runs a web site dedicated to the event and anything tugboat related. For the best place to view the races, take a walk to the Rotary and the Algonquin Regiment Fitness Trail. Pick it up just north of the Stockey Centre, where the trail crosses Bay Street, leading northwest along the shore.
