Business search engines on the internet have become enormously popular, especially the number of ‘local searches’; searches for businesses and products in the user’s own area, is growing rapidly. Gouden Gids wishes to make its position in this segment of the market unchallengeable. Today, Gouden Gids has more than 3.7 million unique visitors to its websites every month. The total number of searches on the internet sites and in the printed directory is more than 260 million on an annual basis. (source: Interview-NSS, April 2006)

Marketing Manager Online, Niek Veendrick: “With the new goudengids.nl it is our intention to demonstrate that we are at the forefront of ‘local searches’. We try to make it as easy as possible for our users to search for and find relevant local information. To this end we are continually developing new, integrated functionalities. For instance: next to the search results, a map is presented which shows all the businesses that have been found. You can also make use of these high quality maps in the further search process when you wish to make a comparison with other similar businesses or store them in your own address book. The results can then easily be retrieved at a later date. In short, we are making the search process easier, so that the user can experience the added value immediately”.

According to Veendrick, the new sites give Gouden Gids the lead on competitors such as Google and De Telefoongids. “Search for ‘kitchens’ in your home town and see what you are presented with on the new goudengids.nl and then compare that with the results on Google. Gouden Gids users have the intention of purchasing a product or service and they expect relevant search results. People who use Google are merely familiarising themselves and often accept irrelevant search results because they search for less specific information there.”

The introduction of the new sites demonstrates that Gouden Gids is continuing to invest rapidly in local search and by that improve it’s the company’s leading position as a local business information search engine.
