Women and Carpal Tunnel Pain
Women, age 30 to 60, are three times as likely as men to suffer from carpal tunnel pain and thirty percent of pregnant women will suffer from this problem during their third trimester due to hormonal changes and fluid retention.
San Diego (PRWEB) August 9, 2006 -- Millions of people in the country suffer from the pain and numbness caused by cumulative trauma disorders, especially Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS). And women are the most common victims. The fact is women are three times as likely as men to experience CTS due to a variety of circumstances. While there are other ergonomic wrist stabilizers on the market, none are as soft fitting, soothing and comfortable as the IMAK Smart Glove, a wrist stabilization system designed to alleviate the pain and numbness caused by CTS as well as being a preventative measure against medical procedures. Co-founded by a woman who herself suffers from carpal tunnel pain, IMAK remains particularly sensitive to the needs of women suffering with CTS, resulting in the development of a product that is exceptionally comfortable. Similar devices focus mostly on stabilizing the wrist, comfort is merely an afterthought. Made from light weight, breathable material, the Smart Glove is the only such device that does not use any Velcro or cumbersome straps of any kind. The Smart Glove slides gently over the wrist to provide flexible, soft and soothing support and is moderately priced at only $19.95.
What is CTS?
CTS occurs when the median nerve, which runs from the forearm into the hand, becomes pressed, squeezed or repeatedly stressed over a long period of time. The median nerve controls sensation to the thumb and fingers (although not the little finger) as well as other small muscles in the hand that allow thumb and finger motion. When the median nerve is aggravated or traumatized over a period of time, numbness and pain (often severe pain) result in the fingers, hand and wrist, even spreading up the forearm.
How does CTS effect women?
| | - A woman’s smaller bone structure means a smaller carpal tunnel – and a higher risk of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.
- Women aged 30-60 are three times more likely than men to suffer CTS.
- 30% of pregnant women will experience CTS during their third trimester due to the accumulation of fluids in the body. (National Institute of Health)
- Hormonal changes in women, such as menopause, often lead to Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.
- Office desks are often designed for men, but women are the ones doing more repetitive tasks such as computer work. This can contribute to higher repetitive stress injuries in women.
- Increasing the use of a keyboard from 1 to 4 hours per day increases the chance of experiencing CTS from 45% to 92%. (National Center for Health Statistics)
- Most CTS wrist devices on the market are not designed with comfort in mind. The Smart Glove is made of soft, breathable material that fits gently over the wrist, providing the most comfortable and soothing pain relief system available.
- A controlled study conducted by the US Postal Service found a 50% decrease in carpal tunnel pain by using the IMAK Smart Glove.

Dr. Ian MacMorran, a hand surgeon with more than 30 years of experience in orthopedic medicine, and Aurelia Koby, President of IMAK, developed the Smart Glove in order to provide a comfortable solution to the pain caused by CTS. Stated Dr. MacMorran: “Trauma to the median nerve causes suffering in millions of people, particularly women,” stated Dr. MacMorran. “The Smart Glove provides a soft and very comfortable stabilization system that relieves pain, prevents further injury and provides treatment while allowing full use of the hand and fingers.”
The patented IMAK Smart Glove is made of a washable, breathable cotton lycra that fits comfortably and softly over the wrist. A flexible splint extends from the wrist to the knuckles providing support while allowing freedom of movement. Similar devices on the market use a “cock-up” splint that holds the wrist in an almost completely immobile position. Over time, this type of system can cause atrophy of the wrist which may add further injury. The Smart Glove also is designed with a bead-filled wrist pad that provides added wrist support, particularly useful when using a computer keyboard. The bead-filled pad is an important facet of the Smart Glove design that keeps the wrist in an ergonomic yet non-rigid position which also prevents muscle atrophy. The Smart Glove is the only wrist support device that has this feature. SRP - $19.95 ($24.95 with optional thumb support).
*An additional product that is extremely beneficial in the treatment of CTS is the IMAK Pil-O-Splint®, an exceptionally comfortable night splint that eases the pain of CTS as well as Arthritis and Tendonitis. Made from a soft, breathable foam, the Pil-O-Splint slides on and off easily. The Pil-O-Splint and the Smart Glove provide a proven system for relieving carpal tunnel pain and other cumulative trauma disorders. The Pil-O-Splint is shaped for maximum healing benefits by gently immobilizing the wrist during sleep. SRP - $39.95.
