West Nile Virus Update: Center for Disease Control Recommends Continued Vigilance

Eighty seven human cases of West Nile Virus have been reported in the U.S. as of August 1, 2006. However, the Center for Disease Control expects that number to climb to around 2,000 by the end of the season, once the final figures are tallied. Therefore, the CDC recommends continued caution.

“We believe West Nile Virus is here to stay, and that people should take precautions,” said CDC spokesperson Christine Pearson. “The primary prevention step recommended is the use of and effective mosquito repellent when outdoors.”

The CDC recommends:

• Use an effective mosquito repellent, especially at dusk and dawn
• Have effective screens on your windows.
• Standing water should be removed from areas around housing.
