Baen Books Appoints New Publisher: Weisskopf Now at the Helm

With the recent and uexpected passing of founder and publisher Jim Baen, 19-year veteran Toni Weisskopf takes the lead.

New York, NY (PRWEB) August 10, 2006 -- Baen Publishing Enterprises has appointed Toni Weisskopf publisher of Baen Books, a leading independent publisher of science fiction distributed by Simon & Schuster. The founding publisher, Jim Baen, passed away in late June, and Toni Weisskopf has been acting publisher since then. A nineteen-year veteran of Baen, Weisskopf’s primary responsibility was that of executive editor. Weisskopf brings to the post a deep-rooted background in science fiction and fantasy, many personal contacts with Baen’s creative force, and a strong presence in the science fiction community.

Baen Books is widely recognized as a leading publisher of military science fiction, alternate history and urban fantasy, and as a pioneer of electronic publishing and web-based marketing through its website www.baen.com. Weisskopf intends to continue Baen’s editorial policies and expects a smooth transition with the strong Baen publishing team.

Recent acquisitions by Weisskopf include David Weber, John Ringo, Eric Flint, and Lois McMaster Bujold, four of Baen’s “brand name” authors and series anchors. Included is a new Honor Harrington novel by David Weber, whose “Honorverse” books total nearly four million in print and regularly hit the New York Times best-seller list. John Ringo has agreed to write three more “Mike O’Neal” books in his New York Times “Posleen War” series. In addition, alternate history master and New York Times best-seller Eric Flint has signed on for three solo novels in his groundbreaking and highly popular “1632” series. Finally, five-time Hugo Award winner Lois McMaster Bujold will deliver a new “Miles Vorkosigan” novel in her best-selling science fiction adventure series.

Weisskopf is a graduate in anthropology of Oberlin College. Her projects outside science fiction include Greasy Grimy Gopher Guts, a collection of obnoxious children’s rhymes, compiled and edited with Josepha Sherman and published by August House.

In a recent statement, Weisskopf commented: “This is a very exciting opportunity for me: I hope to build on Baen’s legacy of independent publishing and keep Baen’s vision of what is best about science fiction alive for many years to come.”
