New immigrants to Burnaby who want to learn English will now be able to learn English for free using The Linguist Institute's leading edge online English learning system. Burnaby is the third largest urban community in British Columbia, with a population of roughly 200,000 people. It has a high percentage of recent immigrants, many of whom are well educated professionals. A survey by the Burnaby School Board, however, found that 43% of adults in Burnaby had difficulty filling out an employment application form in English. “We are thrilled to offer immigrants the opportunity to learn English online for free at The Linguist. The key to successful language learning is just a lot of listening and reading and a good system for remembering vocabulary," says Steve Kaufmann, CEO and Founder of The Linguist, who has been learning languages successfully for over forty years and speaks nine languages fluently including Chinese and Japanese.

”When you learned your own language as a child, you didn't begin by speaking. You began by listening. You don't need to speak too early and you don't need to speak all the time in order to learn English. Even if you are an intermediate learner, extensive reading and listening will create familiarity with the language, enrich your vocabulary, and help you develop confidence. However, it is important that the content you use to learn from be interesting and relevant. This is far more effective than studying grammar rules. For this reason and many more, the ideal place to learn English is online," Kaufmann adds.

The Linguist's unique technology provides the online learning functionality which allows immigrants to learn English from natural, meaningful content. Yuka Chi, a recent immigrant from Japan who works as an artist for Electronic Arts of Burnaby is an enthusiastic English learner. “I enjoy studying on The Linguist because I don't worry about making mistakes and because I know I am improving", she says. “I can't believe I can learn English and enjoy it! I especially like the phrase review section. I can use those phrases naturally now. I made a breakthrough. It was an amazing experience."

In a recently published white paper -— “The Internet-THE Best Place to Learn English" (http://www.thelinguist.com/front/articles/the_best_place_to_learn_english.jsp) —- Steve Kaufmann explains the benefits of the internet to those learning English. For people who want to learn English, the Internet opens up a new world of flexible and satisfying language learning. The Linguist is both a learning system and an international community of learners. It is the first language learning system developed specifically to take advantage of the Internet to learn English.
