In a Securities and Exchange Commission filing, Apple said it would have to restate past results in earnings to take non-cash charges relating to the granting of its stock options. An internal investigation at Apple Computer discovered stock option grant irregularities between 1997 and 2001. Graphics chip maker Nvidia Corp. fell 4.2 percent to $23.16 after the company said dates of some stock option grants were incorrect. Shares of Mills Corp., a real estate investment trust dropped as low as 25% Friday when it was downgraded by Banc of America Securities after the company said accounting errors could reduce net income by $210 million going back to 2003. In a filing Thursday, Mills said the errors could reduce stockholders' equity by $295 million to $315 million. The company also said it will delay its earnings report for the quarter ended June 30 and will take write-offs for assets and abandoned projects. Mills Corp. is looking into a possible sale after it was hit by a regulatory investigation into its accounting practices, and has also announced job cuts. It has indicated that it will restate earnings. Shares of Parlux Fragrances Inc. sank to a new 52-week low on Friday after the company said it would not file its quarterly report on time and quarterly results would fall well below Wall Street expectations. Rotech Healthcare has dropped dramatically over the last two days as the Food and Drug Administration has ordered to stop mass producing certain drugs. Also, Wal-Mart Stores Inc., the world's largest retailer, posted its first profit decline in a decade Tuesday as second-quarter earnings fell 26 percent due to the cost of selling its Germany operation. Dell Computer has announced that it will recall 4.1 million of its notebook computer batteries because of a fire risk.
Watch out for downgrades today on Bisys Group, Ingersoll-Rand, National City Corp., NBTY, Inc. and Pep Boys-Manny Moe & Jack.
