Oscar Kitzbichler left his native Austria in 1982 to pursue a dream in the land of opportunity; America. Now, nearly 25 years later, his successful furniture business, Terrace 22, located in Kingsland, Texas, works with factories in third world countries to design and market hand woven furniture.

Oscar Kitzbichler, entrepreneur and business owner of Terrace 22 and his business associate Susan Connett, flip through Augusts’ issue of Southern Living Magazine amazed at where the success of their journey has taken them.

Described as eco friendly furniture, Southern Living chose Terrace 22 for their unique furnishings created from natural elements such as banana leaf and water hyacinth. These all-natural products cut down on pollution with a more natural manufacturing solution and a unique design.

Perhaps the most fascinating piece to this complex puzzle is not so much the construction of the furniture, but the people who create it. Described as “true manual labor” by Kitzbichler, the handcrafted items are constructed by local villagers. “The workers sit on the ground with no work area or tables to begin weaving the journey from ordinary to extraordinary,” Kitzbichler says. “Their primitive sticks wrap the banana leaves. There are no heavy duty tools just simple items such as screwdrivers, hammers, nuts and bolts.” All furniture is completed to Terrace22’s specific design and standard of quality, bringing “character and charm” to a home.

This is the second time Terrace22 has had their furniture featured in Southern Living magazine. This year’s “Cedar Creek” Idea Home is located in Bryan, Texas highlighting a home where, according to Southern Living, “character-rich materials and a relaxed yet elegant style set the tone inside and outside this impressive Texas spread.”

The Southern Living Idea Home is open for tours now through November 12, 2006. Bryan, Texas is a short trip from major Texas metro areas including Dallas, Houston, Austin and San Antonio. Visitors to the Texas Hill Country can also visit Terrace22 in Kingsland, Texas near Lake LBJ.

In addition to being featured in Southern Living, Terrace 22 has also appeared in other national magazines such as Hearth and Home and Cooking Light. You can see the Open House of the featured Idea Home in Bryan, Texas through November 12 or visit the selection of furniture at Terrace22.com

Closer to home, though, in Kingsland, Texas, Terrace 22 continues to thrive on its successes. Striving to continually improve product quality and comfort, keeps Kitzbilcher on the edge of technology and design. And that, Kitzbichler says, is typically what the customer wants.
