The results are out and unknown songwriter Nicola Philo from, Dereham, Norfolk has beaten 4,000 others to win both the Pop and the Rock/Indie categories in this year’s national UK Songwriting Contest.
London (PRWEB) August 20, 2006 -- The winners of this year’s UK Songwriting Contest have been announced. Unknown songwriter Nicola Philo beats over 4,000 other hopefuls and wins both the Pop and Rock/Indie categories with her song “Feel”. This is the first time any songwriter has won in two different categories in this popular national event.
Nicola Philo, from Westfield, Dereham in Norfolk, is the overall winner of this year’s UK Songwriting Contest. She is the first person to win two categories in this prestigious event. Her song, “Feel”, was also selected by the judges as this year’s overall contest winner and she receives a Gold Disc Award, songwriting software and an Honorary Diploma in Music among other prizes. The judging panels described Nicola’s song as “an expertly crafted Pop song with an Indie feel that deals with the familiar emotions of insecurity in love in an original, powerful and direct way”.
The UK Songwriting Contest was launched in 2002 in association with the BRIT Trust (of BRIT Awards fame) as an annual songwriting event for new British writers. It has gone on to become the most popular songwriting event in the UK with over 4,000 entries every year. The event is supported by BBC Radio, the BRIT Trust, the Music Aid Organisation, the Guild of International Songwriters and Composers, the British Academy of Composers and Songwriters and many other leading music industry bodies.
Other successes this year include the winner of the R&B category, Charlotte Kelly, who was described by Simon Cowell as “The best thing since Elton John and the Bee Gees”. Charlotte, a talented 25 year old singer/songwriter from London, was a very close contender for Overall Winner 2006 but was narrowly beaten in the final judging stages by Nicola Philo.
Many UK Songwriting Contest winners and finalists have gone on to receive publishing and recording offers and have been widely featured and play listed on radio stations in the UK and abroad. The winning song, “Feel”, can be heard at the official contest website at www.songwritingcontest.co.uk. The winning songs in each song category can also be heard on the website. These categories cover most styles of music and include Pop, Rock, Indie, Folk, Country, Gospel, Jazz, R&B, Hip-Hop, Dance, Micellaneous and Instrumental compositions.
