Northern Illinois University English Literature instructor Karley Adney has recently contacted author Brian R. Smith, informing him that his book "Losing Innocence" will be used in her Fall 2006 semester ENGL 110.9 course.
ENGL 110.9 is a close reading for the appreciation of fiction as an embodiment of human and cultural values.
Mr. Smith has also agreed to a speaking engagement in November to discuss "Losing Innocence" and the art of writing captivating fiction with the students of the ENGL 110.9 class.
"Losing Innocence" has gained recognition as a fast paced, heart-felt, emotional raw novel that deals with the subject of spousal and child abuse. It is written with raw honesty and appeals to adults. Those who have children, been through the throes of a divorce or have dealt with abuse strongly relate to the realistic characters.
Mr. Smith donates a portion of all proceeds to RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network) and recently published his second novel, "The Bastard's Plaything."
Reviewers have responded to "Losing Innocence" in an overwhelmingly positive manner. Among comments made in published reviews: "...Smith weaves a story that makes you laugh and cry...pulls you into his story with raw emotion...found myself not wanting to put this book down...he draws you into his well defined characters...touches on ethical issues...very entertaining...," Midwest Book Review, "...the author powerfully and painfully explores the emotional, physical and verbal abuse that tear families apart...Losing Innocence is replete with human suffering, there is still room for love and that unquenched thirst for survival...once started it becomes very difficult to put down...easy to be swept along with the story...," Norm Goldman, Editor, Bookpleasures.com.
A writer since high school, Brian Smith is a single parent born and raised in Iowa and for the last twenty years has resided in the Chicago suburbs. He is currently living in Sycamore, Illinois and is a graduate of Hamilton College.
