Nothing can add more sophistication and style to a room than new carpet, but daily life can take its toll on carpet.
Fear of stains and dirt, however, shouldn't deter homeowners from actually "living" in their homes. According to The Carpet and Rug Institute (CRI), a national trade association representing the carpet and rug industry, the average life of residential carpet is about twelve years and most carpet fibers are treated with soil resistant chemicals. So, with regular care and use of proper tools consumers can expect a long and beautiful life for their carpet. According to Bryan and Melanie James, co-owners of http://www.LexVac.com?pr=082706, there are several tips homeowners can follow to help prolong the life and beauty of carpet. These include regular vacuuming, periodic deep cleaning, proper stain removal, and regular care and maintenance of cleaning equipment.
In an ideal world vacuuming would be done everyday but once a week will suffice to keep debris from building up. The deeper dirt is pushed into the pile of the carpet the harder it is to fully remove. To prevent this build up regular vacuuming is required. For best results be sure to vacuum using slow, constant strokes moving in both directions, paying extra attention to high traffic areas. It is recommended that furniture be removed and vacuumed under at least once every six months to prevent dust build up and to help improve air quality in the home.
There are many different types of carpet fibers and each manufacturer has different recommendations regarding deep cleaning, but the general rule is to shampoo carpeting (wet or dry method) at least once every twelve to eighteen months. Some homeowners prefer to shampoo their own carpets while others opt to hire a professional. Either way, deep cleaning will certainly help keep carpet fresh and beautiful longer.
Accidents will happen and certain stains, such as red wine, ink, or coffee, can seem disastrous, but accidents don't have to result in permanent stains if dealt with quickly and properly. Different fibers and naps require different care and, for best results, the manufacturer's advice on clean up should be followed closely but there are a few general rules to follow in stain removal:
1. Never scrub a stain. This will only result in deeper penetration in the fibers, backing, and possibly the carpet pad.
2. Gently blot as much of the stain as possible with a clean cloth or paper towels (preferably white to prevent any color bleeding).
3. Pre-test any chemicals before using on the stain to prevent any bleaching or discoloration
4. Only apply small amounts of cleaning solution to the stain at a time taking care not to scrub
5. Work slowly from the outside of the stain to the center to prevent making the stain larger on carpet surface
6. Complete these steps until stain is faded or gone
Maintaining cleaning equipment is just as important as cleaning the carpet itself. Some manufacturers recommend routinely wiping the machine down, inside and out as anything on the inside will eventually pass through the motor. Periodically check power cords and switches for any wear and replace as needed. Never pull the cord from the power outlet as this could result in fraying of the wires. It is recommended that the dust bag be replaced every other month if vacuuming is done every week and once a month if done daily. Filters should be replaced every six months and washed clean once a month between replacements to avoid airflow constriction. Belts should be changed every six to twelve months depending on how often the vacuum is used but should be replaced immediately if any tears, cuts, burn spots, or missing teeth are noticed. Roller brushes should be replaced when worn. They are worn when the bristles are soft to the touch. Keep all airflow passages of blockages as this can result in motor burn out.
