New World Record Set as Contest for ‘Extreme Ironing’ Underwater Title Heats Up

A new world record for 'extreme ironing' has been set by Londoner Louise Trewavas, by taking an iron and board to 137m (452 feet) underwater.

London, UK (PRWEB) August 28, 2006 -- The London Eye is 135m high.
The new world record for extreme ironing, set by North Londoner Louise Trewavas is a depth of 137m (452 feet).

Islington-based scuba diver Louise Trewavas took an ironing board and iron to 137m in the Blue Hole, at the Red Sea resort of Dahab, to reclaim her extreme ironing world record. The event took place on 17 August and was captured on underwater video by dive buddy Steve Brown. Dive computers carried by both divers recorded the depth of the dive, and the divers had to spend over three hours in the water carrying out decompression stops in order to avoid the bends.

The extreme ironing underwater record was first set by the 39-year-old Londoner in 2003 with an impressive display of linen-pressing at 100m. Last month however, Teignmouth-based diver John Rudolph challenged for the title by ironing a T-shirt on a 129m dive.

Not to be out-laundered, Louise Trewavas sank to new depths to reclaim her title. “Records are there to be broken, but the boys will have to do better than that if they want to beat me. Bring it on.”

The dive team used sophisticated rebreathers and breathed a gas mixture of oxygen and helium that would prove fatal if breathed at the surface.
