A new website is set to shake up the consumer furniture market. space2.com is a collaboration between leading furniture manufacturer Meristem Furniture Group (MFG) and online marketing agency, Mustard Technologies.

With two-thirds of the 29 million internet users happy to buy online, we do not see why shopping for furniture should be any different to books or music purchases. We recognise that consumers also need the personal touch with purchases of this nature, and we have extensively trained our advisers to ensure they can provide whatever level of support that customers need.

A new website is set to shake up the consumer furniture market. Instead of negotiating busy shops and waiting in long queues, consumers can visit space2.com to buy everything from beds and wardrobes, through to bathroom sink units, kitchens and dining room suites. space2.com is a collaboration between leading furniture manufacturer Meristem Furniture Group (MFG) and online marketing agency, Mustard Technologies.

The website is supported by a database called Red Spider developed by Mustard Technologies. Red Spider centralises all customer and prospect data, and automates order confirmations and delivery information. It also collates customer feedback on their buying experience and sends offers to prospects within areas where they have shown a prior interest. The system also produces MI reports, financial end of day reports and sales reporting.

Prior to launch, space2.com has undertaken research into best customer service practices and has implemented web tools and systems including: allocating a named representative to each purchaser who is fully trained in assembling the furniture they are selling; price promises; 48 hour delivery; and free returns.

Marketing tools on the site include:

  •     a monthly newsletter fronted by top London interior designer Abigail Ahern, giving the latest design dos and dont's and answering customer design questions;
  •     a fun page containing games and competitions that customers can enter to win prizes; and,
  •     the opportunity to preview the latest space2 ranges online and reserve items, with a free upgrade to 48 hour dispatch.

Daniel Owen, Managing Director of Mustard Technologies, commented: “With two-thirds of the 29 million internet users happy to buy online, we do not see why shopping for furniture should be any different to books or music purchases. We recognise that consumers also need the personal touch with purchases of this nature, and we have extensively trained our advisers to ensure they can provide whatever level of support that customers need.”

Budgets of in excess of £800,000 have been allocated for the first three years, to cover website development and marketing spend. space2.com plans to expand the product range and site functionality in 6-12 months, and therefore most of the budgets are allocated to years two and three, for both on and offline development and promotion.
