The Gibson Girl, a special occasion silk purse that is stylish and roomy, makes its introduction today, announced its designer, Jillian Gibson of Alexandria, Virginia. The original Gibson Girl, a creation of early 20th Century painter/illustrator, Charles Dana Gibson, was the model of femininity and sophistication in the early 1900s.
“I’ve always loved purses – what woman doesn’t,” said Ms. Gibson. “And I especially love buying evening bags -- but they don’t hold enough. I’m always looking for a bag that is elegant and stylish, like the original Gibson Girl, but allows me to carry everything I need when I go out. My mother taught me to sew as a young girl, so I decided to design the bag myself. Then I realized that the bag I was designing could be used for any special occasion – not just a night out.”
The Gibson Girl has a pouch design that holds a cell phone, reading glasses, money purse, keys, lipstick and a comb. It can be used for any occasion that calls for a feminine and sophisticated accessory. Bags are made of 100% silk, using many different colors and designs and a variety of handles. There are currently 18 designs available, some in limited quantities. Retail prices begin at $200.
Ms. Gibson comes to this venture via a circuitous route, following careers in politics, advertising and public broadcasting. A recent victim of what was euphemistically called “employment separation,” she says. “I’m a big believer in making lemonade out of lemons. Now I have the freedom to follow my dreams.”
