Mediastudio Brings Artists Together In 24 Hour CreateAThon To Help Local Non-Profits

CreateAThon is a 24 hour creative marathon serving local non-profits. A volunteer team of designers from across the D.C. metro area will assemble at Mediastudio to work for 24 hours straight creating logos, brochures, advertisements, Web sites, communication plans, and other essential business tools free of charge.

Big advertisements and flashy graphics are hard to avoid these days. Podcasts, product placements, and celebrity endorsements are standard tactics big businesses use to get out their message, and they spend millions of dollars to do it. But many non-profit organizations use their resources to provide services to the community, and have little time or money left to invest in marketing. That is why Mediastudio, a premiere branding agency in Falls Church, VA, is hosting the annual CreateAThon.

“Although it takes me longer to wear off an all-nighter than it took in my college days, I am thrilled to be hosting CreateAThon again this year. It is such a happy time in our studio to be able to give generously of our talents. The enthusiasm from the nonprofits we serve is simply a wonderful experience,” said Catherine Shaw, Mediastudio president.

At 8 a.m. on September 15 a volunteer team of graphic designers, writers, and strategists from across the metro area will assemble at Mediastudio to meet with selected non-profits to discuss the business tools they need most. After the initial meeting volunteers work for 24 hours straight to create logos, brochures, advertisements, Web sites, communication plans, and other essential business tools free of charge.

Best described as a creative jam session, volunteers brainstorm and share their expertise while music plays, a barista serves espresso drinks made to order, and a masseuse works kinks out of tired necks during a 3 a.m. break. Work ends at 8 a.m. on September 16 and everyone goes home to rest before attending the celebration that night, where designers will unveil their work for clients.

“They were lifesavers,” said Janelle Hu from APIA Vote, which was selected for CreateAThon 2005. “We desperately needed a Web site to solicit funds for our organization. Without their help we would have gotten something fairly basic. But now we have a really beautifully designed piece that reflects well on us and what we are trying to do.”

More than 65 applications were received and 11 were selected by an independent panel from the non-profit community. The organizations benefiting from CreateAThon this year include ABC Craftmasters Training, ARRIBA, Ascensions Psychological and Community Services; Books, Bears, and Bonnets; Critical Exposure, The I Do Foundation, Interstages, Project Create, Stop the Silence: Stop Child Sexual Abuse, Urban Alliance, and Visitor’s Service Center.

This is the third year that Mediastudio has hosted CreateAThon. During that time Mediastudio has donated approximately $300,000 of in-kind services to local non-profits. Mediastudio is a premiere branding agency representing small to mid-size businesses in Virginia, Maryland, and Washington, D.C. since 1995.
