Children nationwide will benefit from the September 2006 America Learns National Strategy of the Month.

America Learns announced today that a tutoring strategy created by America Reads – Mississippi member Sherry Martin has been named September’s National Strategy of the Month. Throughout September, Sherry’s strategy will be available for free to thousands of teachers, tutors, mentors and parents nationwide through the America Learns website and monthly e-newsletter.

Sherry created her strategy after finding that some of her students were failing to recognize the letters of the alphabet through traditional teaching techniques. Her strategy, called “Nice to Meet you, Mr./Ms. Letter,” engages preschool and Kindergarten students in a group activity that gets the kids up and moving while making the lesson feel more like a game than a learning activity.

“Sherry is an incredible tutor,” said Dr. Helen J. Wyatt, Regional Director, Alcorn State University America Reads-Mississippi region. “She tries different approaches to meet the needs of the students she tutors. Her enthusiasm rubs off on her students. Sherry will make a great teacher one day because she really cares about her students and their learning.”

“The AmeriCorps members we have the opportunity to serve nationwide continue to wow and inspire us daily,” said Gary Kosman, Founder and CEO, America Learns. “Sherry’s dedication to thinking and acting locally is now helping students we reach nationwide develop the knowledge and skills needed for reading success.”

Sherry’s strategy may be accessed for the remainder of September at, and will be permanently available to all America Learns Network members.
