Eat Potato Pancakes and Yodel at Alphorn Bistro’s Third Annual Oktoberfest
The Potato Pancake Eating contest is back by popular demand at the third annual Oktoberfest celebration September 16 and 17 at Alphorn Bistro at Inn at Danbury.
(PRWEB) September 9, 2006 -- The Potato Pancake Eating contest is back by popular demand at the third annual Oktoberfest celebration September 16 and 17 at Alphorn Bistro at Inn at Danbury.
The weekend will center around German music and a continuous feast of traditional bratwurst, schnitzel, red cabbage, German potato salad, sauerkraut, hunter’s stew, and German beers and wines—all of it either under the tent outdoors or in the dining room.
Innkeepers Robert and Alexandra Graf, who run the inn and bistro along with their four children, said they are encouraged by growth and interest in German cuisine and culture over the three years they have been doing Oktoberfest.
“Since we’re one of the few options for German cuisine in the region, we really want to give people the kind of authentic German and Austrian food they might be missing. And then, we throw in the incredible fun of an Oktoberfest party to give them a taste of the old country—like in Munich, just on a much smaller scale,” said Robert Graf, who also serves as the Bistro’s chef.
Oktoberfest takes place from noon to 8 p.m. Saturday, and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday, rain or shine.
The Alphorn Bistro was voted “Best German Restaurant” in New Hampshire by New Hampshire Magazine readers in 2006.
In addition to the Potato Pancake Eating contest, participants can enter a cooking contest with their best recipes for German Potato Salad or Sauerkraut, or they can show up in traditional German or Austrian costume to compete for prizes. A yodeling contest is also planned. Cooking contestants can register at http://www.innatdanbury.com/oktoberfest.
Accordion music—with dancing encouraged—will be provided by Warren Johnson on Saturday and by Mike Kaelin on Sunday. Bring a lawn chair to relax and enjoy the music. Also, a new German band will debut at the event, and visitors can participate in a “Name the Band” contest. The new band, led by Dave Cook of the Kearsarge Community Band, will play on Saturday. The winner of the Name the Band contest will receive a $20 gift certificate for the Alphorn Bistro.
Cover charge is $5 per person and $4 for senior citizens. For each adult ticket sold beyond 250 people, $1 will be donated to the March of Dimes. Children under age 13 are free. Oktoberfest is a casual, come-as-you-are event with no reservations needed.
