Public Invited to Free Segway Polo Demonstration Sept. 17; New Segway Models will be Unveiled
Segway of Oakland’s Segway Polo team will compete against this year’s co-world champions Sept. 17 in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park polo fields at the 22nd annual Polo in the Park festival.
(PRWEB) September 9, 2006 -- The public is invited to catch this free demonstration and stick around afterward for a unique opportunity to try out a Segway, including the latest models unveiled only a couple of weeks ago.
The annual Polo in the Park event kicks off at 11 a.m. with traditional horse polo, a French picnic/luncheon, fashion and car shows, and a silent auction. Cost to participate is $100 -- call (415) 221-9438 or (415) 751-9275, or email horsesinca @ aol.com for reservations and ticket information.
The Segway Polo demonstration four-chukka match, with teams of six on six, will commence afterwards at around 1 p.m., and spectators are invited to watch this event free of charge and stay later for free demonstrations, even if they do not participate in the luncheon. Segway of Oakland’s SegwayJunkyard Dogs team will face off against this year’s Segway Polo co-world champions, Sillicon Valley Aftershocks, fresh off international competition in New Zealand earlier this year, where they faced teams from Dubai, Netherlands and China, among others.
Segway of Oakland partner, Steve Steinberg, describes Segway Polo as “a new high-tech sport that merges man with machine.
“It’s the first of future death sports,” he added jokingly. “We play on sophisticated technical machines that even out the playing field, and then we rely on skill. We anticipate a good sample of all Segway models, from the smaller p Series, to the off-road XTs, to the new i2 units.”
Playing for the Aftershocks are Steve Wozniak, one of the Apple Computers founders, and Victor Miller, writer of the original Friday the 13th movies and All My Children, the long-running soap opera. Both are considered among the world’s top players in this emerging sport.
This is the second year in a row that a Segway Polo match has followed traditional horse polo at Polo in the Park.
“This is one of the only places where you can actually get up close to all the Segway models, jump on them and try them out,” Steinberg said.
