New York, NY (PRWEB) September 11, 2006 -- The High Atlas Foundation (HAF) is pleased to announce a special reception on September 21st 2006 from 6:00pm - 8:00pm at the Urban Center, New York Palace Hotel (457 Madison Avenue). His Excellency André Azoulay, Advisor to H.M. King Mohammed VI of Morocco, will deliver the keynote speech and HAF will honor Carol Bellamy, former Director of UNICEF and U.S. Peace Corps.

This event is in support of HAF's new initiative to plant one million fruit trees with communities throughout rural Morocco. HAF launched the Kate Jeans-Gail Memorial Fruit Tree Nursery in June 2006 to pay tribute to the inspired life of a former Peace Corps volunteer who served in Morocco and who tragically lost her life along with her mother in a car accident shortly after returning from her service in 2003. This special project to plant 100,000 fruit trees in Kate's memory led to an ambitious goal of planting one million fruit trees across the entire country. For more information, you can read our comprehensive tree nursery proposal at GlobalGiving.com.

The High Atlas Foundation was founded in 2000 by former Peace Corps volunteers who served in Morocco as a way of using their experience and knowledge gained during their years of service for the continued benefit of the Moroccan people. HAF's mission is to establish rural economic development projects that local communities design and manage and that are in partnership with government and non-government agencies. The priority projects that local communities have determined and that HAF supports include tree planting, women's cooperatives, irrigation and potable water.

Honorary Chairs for the September 21st reception include Professor Charles Benjamin, University of Vermont; Professor John Entelis, Fordham University; the Honorable Edward Gabriel, former United States Ambassador to Morocco; the Honorable Marc Ginsberg, former United States Ambassador to Morocco; Wendy Kopp, President and Founder of Teach For America; H.E. Aziz Mekouar, Moroccan Ambassador to the United States; Kevin Quigley, President of the National Peace Corps Association; Tim Resch, President of Friends of Morocco; the Honorable Thomas Riley, current United States Ambassador to Morocco; and the Honorable Margaret Tutwiler, former United States Ambassador to Morocco.
