Pirates Protest Lack of Dockage in Palm Beach County
eBoatCharters.com Haunted Pirate Regatta unites boaters.
(PRWEB) September 15, 2006 -- eBoatCharters.com has organized a Haunted Pirate Regatta on October 28, 2006 to celebrate Halloween nautical style. The original plan was to meet in Jupiter at the well known sandbar near the Alternate A1A Bridge, then sail down to the MoonFest celebration in West Palm Beach.
“When I tried to find dockage for our little fleet downtown,” reports Serena Hoermann, owner of eBoatCharters.com, “I was confronted with a sadly familiar problem: limited public dockage available.” If several small motorboats, up to 25’ long wanted to dock, there would only be room for three or four vessels at the Southernmost Pier, for example. Arrgghh!
Hoermann has encountered this problem before. The Tequesta based yacht and boat charter company at the Seagate Marina plans corporate events and private functions on boats all over Florida. In Palm Beach County, the public marina space is very limited. One factor, according to Michelle Sheldone’s September 13th article in the Jupiter Courier, is this county’s method of assessing properties not covered by homestead exemption. Property taxes are soaring for working waterfront properties, as much as 300% in the last year, according to the Marine Industries Association of Florida. As a result, marinas are under financial strain and some are choosing to “go condo” instead of providing public access. Palm Beach County Commission Chair Tony Masilotti was quoted as saying “Even if we roll back the (millage) rate, those properties would still double and triple in tax.”
So instead of docking, the eBoatCharters.com Haunted Pirate Regatta will be protesting. Like-minded citizens are encouraged to support the cause by meeting by boat at the Jupiter Sandbar at 3pm on Saturday, October 28th.
