Despite Fewer Projected 2006 Hurricanes, Everyone Must Remain Prepared, Urges Emergency Preparedness Institute
Still 59% chance of a hurricane to make landfall before season ends according to latest advisory
Chicago, IL; Mt. Prospect, IL (PRWEB) September 20, 2006 -- The Emergency Preparedness Institute today issued a preparedness advisory, encouraging the public to maintain its readiness despite the calmer than expected 2006 hurricane season.
Other private sector institutions as well as government agencies and the media are urged to keep preparedness on the radar screen despite the fewer number of predicted hurricanes this year and certainly far less than 2005, said Norris Beren, Executive Director of the Emergency Preparedness Institute.
Beren said forecasters have twice downgraded projections for the number of hurricanes predicted for 2006. Concurrently, media attention has waned significantly. Even so, Beren cited information from the Department of Atmospheric Science at Colorado State University indicating there is still a 59% chance that a September hurricane will hit landfall as presented in its Forecast of Atlantic Hurricane Activity for September and October prepared by William Gray and Phillip J. Klotzbach.
“The public should not be lulled into “optimism bias” or the feeling that a late season hurricane will not occur even though we are past the half-way point in the season. In fact, people need to fight feelings of “hurricane fatigue” and remain vigilant in order to be prepared should an unexpected late season storm occur,” said Beren.
The Emergency Preparedness Institute is a not-for-profit corporation that provides education and awareness training to help people help themselves in times of need.
Mr. Beren is author of the recently published book on Family Emergency Disaster Planning entitled “When Disaster Strikes Home” 101 + ways to protect your family from unthinkable emergencies. He has more than 30 years experience in identifying, reducing and managing risk and has worked with more than 1,000 companies managing insurance, risk and safety management programs.
