Eleven Long-Term Care Facilities in Kentucky Being Acquired by Harborside Healthcare

Boston firm agrees to purchase facilities operated by Wells Health Systems, Inc. of Owensboro, KY.

Boston, MA (PRWEB) September 20, 2006 -- Harborside Healthcare, one of the nation’s most respected skilled-nursing and long-term care companies, today announced that it will acquire eleven facilities in Kentucky operated by Wells Health Systems, of Owensboro, Kentucky.

The facilities are located throughout western Kentucky in Bardwell, Bowling Green, Bowling Green, Brownsville, Elizabethtown, Lewisport, Madisonville, Owensboro, Paducah, and Woodburn.

The eleven facilities consist of a total of 763 beds in eight rehabilitation and long-term care centers, two Alzheimer’s disease specialty facilities and Heritage Place Assisted Living Center in Owensboro. Details of the agreement between the two private companies are not being disclosed. The companies expect to complete the transaction on October 1, 2006.

“We are very pleased to see Harborside Healthcare continue to grow in Kentucky,” said Ruby Jo Cummins Lubarsky, president of the Kentucky Association of Health Care Facilities (KAHCF). “I know Harborside as a company that has always been a strong advocate for delivering exceptional care to our elders and the disabled. This is an exciting development for health care in our state.”

Harborside’s services fall into four general categories: long-term care, care for Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, specialized medical care and rehabilitation. The company is an industry innovator in developing and providing post-acute care, long-term care, and other specialty medical programs and services.

“The facilities we are acquiring are well known by the residents and the families that they serve for a commitment to delivering quality and compassionate care. That is an attribute we greatly admire and value,” said Harborside Healthcare Chairman and CEO, Damian Dell’Anno. "We expect to maintain a strong presence in Kentucky and look forward to preserving and enhancing the quality of care provided by these facilities and continuing the legacy of care provided to the residents they serve."

On July 1, 2005, Harborside Healthcare acquired nine facilities in northern Kentucky from SeniorCare, LLC. Harborside expects to maintain regional offices in both Louisville and Owensboro, KY.

“We are very pleased to be expanding our operations in Kentucky. Our experience in the past 15 months has been very successful. One of the greatest attributes of operating in Kentucky is the quality of the workforce. Our experience has shown that the caregivers in our Kentucky facilities are second to none. The dedication and compassion they bring with them to work every day is a cornerstone of our success,” continued Dell’Anno. “The staff of the Wells facilities share that attribute as is clear from their outstanding reputation for quality and commitment to care.

“We are proud of the excellent care Wells Health Systems staff has provided Kentucky residents over the past 27 years,” said Jack Wells, co-owner of Wells Health Systems. “We have worked hard over the years to develop and maintain an outstanding reputation for quality and service. We are confident that Harborside will continue that reputation and earn the trust of the communities we serve. Our greatest asset has always been our committed staff and we thank them for their many years of dedicated service and wish them well as they join the Harborside family.”

Wells Health Systems facilities in Kentucky have won numerous awards from the Kentucky Association of Health Care Facilities including many district and state-wide “Facility of the Year” honors. Both Mr. Wells and his co-owner Jean Wells have been honored with the Association’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

Harborside operates 56 facilities and employs more than 9,000 full and part-time employees in nine states in New England, the Mid-Atlantic and the Midwest. Nearly 7,000 individuals receive care at its facilities in Connecticut, Indiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Ohio, Kentucky and Rhode Island. The company was founded in 1987.

On May 10, 2006, Harborside announced entry into the Home Healthcare arena with the acquisition of Physician’s Health Care of Quincy MA.

On May 1, 2006, Harborside announced the acquisition of three facilities in Connecticut formerly operated by the Diocese of Bridgeport.

Harborside facilities have won more national quality awards than any other long-term care provider of its size, including five of the prestigious American Health Care Association (AHCA) Step II Quality Awards recognizing long-term care organizations that seek excellence in all aspects of providing care and services. In 2002, Harborside Healthcare was one of the first in its profession to adopt an industry-driven, voluntary quality initiative in which the company and its employees pledged to follow a formal code of conduct and ethical management practices known as “Quality First.” For more information, please see http://www.harborsidehealthcare.com.
