“I’ve survived more than my share of tricky island days,” says Christmas Whetstone, the only woman on the core crew of air pirates. “Back in the day, I was a Gilligan’s Island stowaway and ended up adrift in a dingy with nothing but my wit, a good knee sock and a taste for pygmies.” In her sorry story, listeners will come to know the venom behind Whetstone’s disgust with anyone who can’t survive a few challenges and swat a few mosquitoes or team mates as the need arises.
Lance Manion brings a schooled perspective to the team, having leveraged more than a decade of graduate-level rubbish into an esteemed career as a short-order cook slash pharmaceutical distributor. “I jumped ship here, with a case of Kessler’s, another of Hamm’s and three cartons of Pall Malls,” says Manion. “My biggest challenge is keeping the beer cold.” He has no trouble ripping on stupidity as quickly as he pops the top on breakfast.
“I once saw Rupert in a truck stop in Indianapolis,” says Sterling InnWood in the Behind the Mic episode, getting audibly flushed. Clearly InnWood is the most devoted (read: obsessed) Survivor fan huddled round the beachside mic. He’s been collecting memorabilia of the sordid sort long before that chance meeting in Indy supplied him with a jar of Rupert’s best. InnWood vows to root for the underdog, claiming that Survivor is a microcosmic version of the American class struggle.
Unfortunately for Clay Melon, his melon is as fragile as clay—glass jaw, you see and that’s not a career-propelling characteristic for a prize fighter dreaming of becoming an Ultimate Fighting Championship fighter. But the fight in him explains the numerous restraining orders that encouraged him to move willingly to Pukapuka, where, says Melon, “The rest of these wretched castaways found me squatting in the World War 11 bomb shelter. Hitting below the belt—that’s my specialty. I’ll give you the low-down, especially down-under. Raunchy, slimy and no innuendo.”
