Rob White Joins University of California Press as Film Quarterly Editor

Former British film institute editor becomes only the third editor in Film Quarterly’s history. He will oversee the journal through its 50th anniversary year.

Berkeley, California (PRWEB) September 21, 2006 -- University of California Press Journals and Digital Publishing is very pleased to announce that Rob White has become the new editor of Film Quarterly. Rob joins Film Quarterly at an auspicious time in its history: on the cusp of celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of its first publication in 1958. Formerly with the British Film Institute, Rob has many years of experience in publishing as the Series and Commissioning Editor for both the BFI Film Classics and Modern Classics series. His film background, his own scholarly work, and the wide range of his writing, both academic and popular, made him the perfect candidate to lead Film Quarterly into its second half-century.

Fifty years of publishing high-quality and pioneering criticism, research, and analysis in Film Quarterly has left a rich legacy for scholars and others with a passion for film. The coming volumes promise to build on that legacy—reaffirming a commitment to the serious study of international cinema, while also covering television, documentary, avant-garde film and video, and the moving image online. In coming issues of Film Quarterly, there will be a renewed focus on contributions by leading film practitioners, debate-oriented book review essays will pave the way for other short-format articles, and in-depth reviews will run closer to films’ release dates.

"Film Quarterly is a unique journal and one of the three or four most distinguished film periodicals in the world. So I’m delighted to have been appointed as only its third editor after Ernest Callenbach and Ann Martin. With the fiftieth anniversary coming up in 2008, it’s a perfect time to reflect on the history of Film Quarterly and plot a course for it that will consolidate its enormous reputation, taking it from strength to strength." –Rob White, Editor, Film Quarterly

"Rob White is an outstanding example of the fresh enthusiasm and energy a new editor can bring to a publication. He provides Film Quarterly with new international appeal, diversity, and access, reaching a wider range of contributors and readers.” --
Rebecca Simon, University of California Press Associate Director for Journals + Digital Publishing
