The band is widely viewed as one of the most influential post-punk bands of the late ‘90s. It marked the first appearance of Chris Gunst (later of Beachwood Sparks), and Jimmy Tamborello (who went on to form the Postal Service, Figurine and Dntel).
Described as ‘Eno-core’ for its merger of hardcore punk and the experimental atmospherics of Brian Eno, Strictly Ballroom was formed in 1994 by four KXLU DJs -- guitarist/singer Gunst, bassist Tamborello, guitarist Paul Larson and drummer Ian MacKinnon.
“This is an especially meaningful album for Waxploitation. It was the reason the label was created in the first place,” says label founder Jeff Antebi.” I fell in love with the band, and was compelled to create a label for no other purpose than to release their music. Almost a decade later, this album still resonates powerfully.”
Waxploitation is the Artist Management company for artists including Danger Mouse, Gnarls Barkley and Dangerdoom. Its label arm will release forthcoming new albums by Teargas Plateglass (in 2006) and Tweaker (in 2007).
