Georgia Power, One of South's Leading Energy Companies, Equips Fleet Vehicles with New Back-Up Sensors from Autero

As part of an initiative to increase safety precautions, Georgia Power outfitted 400 vehicles with back-up sensors. They tested numerous equipment from different companies and chose license plate sensors from Autero.

Austin, TX (PRWEB) September 23, 2006 -- Autero’s cutting-edge safety technology can now be found on 400 of Georgia Power’s fleet vehicles. A subsidiary of one of the largest energy companies in the country, Southern Company, Georgia Power chose the new license plate sensors because they are the most versatile and convenient. The equipment is simple to install around an existing license plate, with no drilling and a non-permanent set-up. It can also be easily transferred from one fleet vehicle to another.

Georgia Power conducted a pilot of a variety of back-up sensors from different companies. “The Autero sensor proved to be the most reliable sensor for the cost associated with it,” concluded Jenny Taylor, a Fleet Engineer for the company.

Georgia Power’s well-researched decision is consistent with their commitment to safety, as reflected in their slogan, “Target Zero — every day, every job, safely.” According to Taylor, the company is making efforts to reduce backing accidents, aiming for a safer work environment for employees and communities where their fleet vehicles operate. “These sensors provide us a tool to use to help accomplish this initiative,” explains Taylor. At this stage, Georgia Power will equip their front-line vehicles, a portion of their fleet chosen specifically due to the frequency, manner and location of their operation. The benefits expected from this move include a reduction in the number of backing accidents, minimizing costs associated with such accidents, increased attention to safety -- and potentially saving a life.

“Autero is pleased that we were able to earn the trust and business of a large and respected power company,” states Jared Jolly, President of Autero. “We feel honored that Georgia Power chose Autero and our products.”

Like Georgia Power, many fleet owners are discovering the wisdom of installing safety equipment on their vehicles. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates the potential of preventing back-up accidents is better than 70 percent with a back-up alert system. Each year, about 20 percent of all fleet drivers are involved in an on-the-job vehicle accident, compared to the six percent of workers in other occupations who suffer an on-the-job injury or illness.

While safety remains the top priority, cost is a significant consideration for fleet owners. According to the American Society of Safety Engineers, the average cost of a fleet accident, including direct and indirect costs, is $14,000. A more efficient fleet means less mileage per vehicle, meaning fewer maintenance problems and less vehicle downtime.

Jolly is confident that Georgia Power will discover the economical benefits of placing these sensors on their vehicles. He explains, “We expect that with the addition of this safety device that their reversing accidents will reduce by as much as seventy percent, which will save them thousands of dollars.”

Autero is the only supplier in the US boasting the concept and design of a parking sensor system made specifically with the commercial vehicle in mind.
