Exploring the First Stage Implementation Results of Pfizer’s RFID Pilot Program

Counterfeit drugs are a major concern for pharmaceutical manufacturers, distributors and pharmacies across the nation. In response to the growing problem of fake drugs, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently issued RFID compliance guidelines. The FDA is strongly encouraging Schedule II pharmaceutical companies to implement RFID tags, by 2007, with unique identifiers enabling them to track and trace their products throughout the supply chain.

Pfizer, in January 2006, launched a pilot program to secure the supply chain by tagging Viagra with RFID. This enables Pfizer to track and trace the product through the manufacturing process to the supplier, and even to the customer. As of April 2006 only RFID tagged bottles of Viagra are available. Pharmacists and wholesalers use the RFID tags to authenticate the drug.

Peggy Staver, Pfizer’s Director of Trade Product Integrity, presents the latest results and metrics from the first stage of Pfizer’s RFID pilot program. Join this interactive web conference to learn first hand Pfizer’s resulting metrics and analysis of the RFID program.

Take away points include:

  • Combating the counterfeit drug problem
  • Implementing an RFID program in the pharmaceutical industry
  • Tracking the product through the entire supply chain
  • Developing metrics and analyzing RFID data

The RFID for Pharma Web Conference will take place on, October 10, 2006, from 1-3 p.m. EDT.
