The Ohio Civil Rights Commission Announces Annual Martin Luther King Contest Winners
Executive Director G. Michael Payton has announced the winners of The Ohio Civil Rights Commission (OCRC) 2006 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Art and Essay Contest. The following winners will be honored in an awards ceremony on Thursday, January 12, 2006 following the OCRC public meeting.
Columbus, OH (PRWEB) January 7, 2006 -- Executive Director G. Michael Payton announced the winners of The Ohio Civil Rights Commission (OCRC) 2006 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Art and Essay Contest. These winners will be honored in an awards ceremony on Thursday, January 12, 2006 following the OCRC public meeting.
“We received approximately 2000 entries this year, which says something profound about the children of Ohio,” said Executive Director Payton. “They are all winners because they understand the legacy of Dr. King and have improved themselves and their communities as demonstrated in their contest submissions.”

3rd Grader, Ashlynne Daley of St. Agnes Central Elementary School (Mingo Junction)
4th Grader, Elizabeth Topinka of Village Academy Elementary School (Powell)
5th Grader, Jasmine Davis of Washington Intermediate Elementary School (Piqua)
2006 Essay contest winners are:
6th Grader, Maximillion Palmer-Williams of Franklin Alternative Middle School (Columbus)
7th Grader, Molly Mangel of Bexley Middle School (Bexley)
8th Grader, Ashley Gilkerson of St. Louis High School (Owensville)
10th Grader, Sarah Asher of Hamilton High School (Hamilton)
11th Grader, Tessa Liniger of River High School (Hannibal)
12 th Grader, Lindsay Smeiles of Field High School (Mogadore, Oh)
The OCRC holds public meetings once every three to four weeks. The five appointed Commissioners hear arguments regarding discrimination complaints and vote on cases that have been submitted.
The public meeting and reception will take place in the Continental Room located on the ground floor of the building. The OCRC’s central office is located at 1111 East Broad Street, Suite 301, Columbus, Ohio 43205. The contest reception will follow the public meeting. The meeting will begin promptly at 10:00 A.M. This meeting is free and open to the public; however, large groups are encouraged to contact the OCRC to secure accommodations and seating. The OCRC receives and investigates charges of discrimination in employment, housing, credit and higher education on the basis of race, color, sex, religion, country of national origin age, ancestry, disability and families with children.
